What is it for?

Knowing your IP helps you allow your access in firewalls, configure DNS records, whitelist your IP in panels or services, or request technical support. If you see an IPv6 address, your connection uses the modern protocol; if it shows "Not available (no IPv6)", your provider still delivers IPv4 only.
